Chardi Kalaa Jatha
The Chardi Kala Jatha is a group of young American Sikhs who have been training in traditional Gurbani Kirtan in Amritsar, Punjab under their ‘Ustaad ji’, Narinder Singh Sandhu. The Jatha has had the privilege of singing Gurbani Kirtan in the Siri Harimandir Sahib ( the Golden Temple ) in Amritsar. The members of the jatha are: Sada Sat Simran Singh Khalsa, Jagat Guru Singh Khalsa and Harimandir Jot Singh Khalsa. They have recorded two Gurbani Kirtan CDs with T-series recording studio, in New Delhi and two meditation CDs with Supertrack Studio in Ludhiana. Sada Sat Simran Singh Khalsa grew up in the Raj Khalsa Sangat and often comes home to play kirtan at Raj Khalsa Gurdwara.
Each member of the Chardi Kala Jatha had the honor of serving their spiritual teacher, the late Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogi Ji. The Siri Singh Sahib personally directed all three members of the Chardi Kala Jatha to study Gurmat and Gurbani in India. During their summer breaks, the Jatha would visit him in New Mexico and would sit at his feet and learn. In addition to Gurbani, Yogi Ji helped to mold their character and he taught them that their role as Gursikhs would go beyond their identity as ‘Raagis’ and would involve other aspects of Sikhism in addition to Gurbani Kirtan. On many of the Siri Singh Sahib’s visits to India, the Jatha had the honor of serving as his security and hospitality detail as he traveled throughout India. It was through the grace of God and Guru that they were able to learn from him and be in his presence. They now travel throughout India and the world spreading the Guru’s teachings through playing Gurbani Kirtan and embodying the spirit and mission of the Gurus.
Spirit Voyage Music
The Raj Khalsa Sangat has been blessed with talented musicians since we joined together almost 40 years ago. Yogi Bhajan encouraged us to learn kirtan and to practice “Naad Yoga”, the yoga of the sound current.
“We meditate so that our minds can be sharp and alert. We chant mantras so that our souls may be ignited like candles. We walk in the light of this beauty.” Yogi Bhajan
In 2000, GuruGanesha Singh Khalsa, one of our beloved Sangat members and a life-long musician himself decided to take his love of music and his understanding of the power of sacred chanting to a larger venue. He felt that the merging of devotion and chanting needed to find a much bigger place in the world, and he made it his mission to make an impact. He started the company “Spirit Voyage” to produce and distribute sacred spiritual music, including Sikh chants and shabads as well as devotional chants of other faiths and religious traditions.
GuruGanesha’s garage was the first warehouse for Spirit Voyage. With the first launch of the Spirit Voyage website, sales began streaming in and the business soon outgrew his garage. In 2003, Karan Kahran Kaur Khalsa joined the Spirit Voyage team to focus on growth and expansion. Over the next two years, the business doubled each year and by 2004 she became the CEO. In 2005, Hargobind Singh Khalsa became a partner in the business, initially coming in to focus on growth and expansion, but ultimately taking on the reigns of running the entire distribution business.
Today, Spirit Voyage has expanded into three divisions:
- Spirit Voyage Live Events – which consists of GuruGanesha Singh, Snatam Kaur and the Celebrate Peace Tour. They perform at hundreds of venues each year throughout the US and the world.
- Spirit Voyage Records – the record label which produces and promotes the CD’s of Snatam Kaur as well as a number of other sacred chant artists
- Spirit Voyage Music – the distribution business that sells sacred music CD’s as well as books and products for yoga, meditation and healing
